Recently, we received a Balloonee disposable Helium gas tank and a set of balloons from Brothers Gas, and I wanted to plan some fun for the kids with these. I thought of doing some Halloween decor with the balloons to get into the ‘spirit’ of the season (pun intended).
We got orange, white and black latex balloons, filled them with helium gas and tied them with a string. The plan was to create Halloween themed characters with the balloons. The white balloons would make Ghosts and Skeletons, black would be used for Bats and Spiders, while the Orange would look like Pumpkins!
Ghosts –
We started by using a black permanent marker to draw ghostly eyes and mouth on the white balloons and cut some 2 feet long streamers from white crepe streamers to stick on the bottom of the white balloons to make them look like Ghosts. You have to get the number of streamers just right, as we noticed 4 streamers would still let the balloons go high, 5 streamers made them fall down but 4 1/2 (cutting the fifth streamer in half) made the balloon ‘float’ in mid-air like a ghost.
- White streamers
- Sticking them on to the ghost balloons
- The ‘ghosts’ floating around.
Skeletons –
We kept these simple by drawing skeleton-like features on the white balloons and Stuck them on the walls.
Pumpkins –
These just required triangle eyes and nose and a weird smile to be drawn on the Orange balloons, to make them look like Pumpkins. These were stuck on the wall/tables too.

Pumpkin Balloons
Bats –
I had drawn and cut out some bat wings from black craft paper, and stuck them on the sides of the black balloons, to make them look like Bats.
- Bat wings drawn on paper
- Bat wings cut out and ready to stick on
- Bat wings stuck on opposite ends of a black balloon
Spider –
This was the toughest bit, as we wanted to create a spider in the corner of our drawing room. Luckily for me, my husband is quite tall, so he managed to reach the ceiling with the help of a step-ladder. We stuck a black balloon right in the corner of the ceiling, then cut out right different streamers in varying lengths from black crepe streamer and stuck them all around the balloon, to make it look like a real spider.
A point to note is that, helium balloons last only 3-4 hours, so this decor should be done just a couple of hours before any event. Most other creatures except the ghost balloons, can be done with air-filled balloons too.
We had a great time while doing the entire decor and then had a spooky Halloween party at home, taking loads of pictures and having fun with friends and family.
